323: Getting What You Want

rolling stonesNo, you can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometime you just might find
You get what you need

The Rolling Stones

One of my teachers described stress as ‘not getting what you want’. Stress and numerous other emotions arise from this feeling of not having our needs met.

One of my more humiliating moments was standing in front of 40 yoga students while I got a dressing down in all the ways I was imbalanced. Did I want it, No, did I need it, probably. Although we don’t always see it at the time, what we are getting is often what we need.

We may walk out of our yoga class disgruntled because we didn’t get what we went in for. Maybe it was a relief teacher, or maybe a class that wasn’t fast enough or too slow. A feeling of dissatisfaction can arise and we want to spread that dissatisfaction to others.

Take the case of the lottery winner who on receiving 24 million dollars finds out they should have been awarded 24 and a half million dollars. This ensues into a court case and stress and dissatisfaction are the predominant winners.

Clearly then, if we are to be happy we have to realise that sometimes the dish we are served is not what we want. However we have a choice on how to lead from there. Either accept it as a lesson to show us a different path, or fight with it adding some stress to your life.

Practice for today: If somewhere along your daily path you find that something is not quite what you wanted, consider how that could eventually be a blessing in disguise.
And if you try sometime you just might find, you get what you need.
